A birthday card should feel personal.
A simple “Happy Birthday” is nice. But it can be easy to forget.
The best birthday cards say something that feels special. Mention a favorite memory. Share something you love about them. Add a little joke that only you both understand.
What to Write in a Birthday Card
Not sure what to say? Start with something simple.
Try: “One thing I love about you is…”
You can also choose a birthday message from our suggestions. Then edit it to make it your own and create a personalised birthday card.
Make Your Birthday Card More Fun
Want to make your birthday wishes more exciting? Try an interactive birthday eCard.
Your message stays hidden until the recipient completes a fun reveal. They can blow out birthday candles, pop balloons, cut a birthday cake, or even inflate a balloon until it bursts.
This makes your birthday eCard more than just a message. It turns your birthday wishes into a fun surprise they can enjoy before reading your message.
Choose your favourite interactive birthday card above. Try the reveal yourself. Then personalise your card and send a birthday surprise they will remember.
What Should I Write in a Birthday Card?
Write one specific thing rather than three general ones. A good birthday message can follow three simple beats: the birthday wish, something personal about them or the year they have had, and a warm sign-off.
Specific always beats elaborate. “Another year of you talking me into things I would never do alone” feels more personal than a paragraph of general birthday wishes.
Our suggested birthday messages can also make it easier to get started. The recipient’s name is added automatically, so even a message you choose from the builder already feels partly personalised.
Send it so it arrives on the morning of their birthday. An eCard is delivered instantly by link or email, so there is no postage window to plan around; early on the day itself is ideal, when they are picking up their phone and the messages are starting to come in.
Worried you will forget? Schedule it at checkout and we will email it on the day in their local time, or set a free yearly reminder so the date never catches you out again.
Not when the recipient gets to be part of the experience. The usual problem with eCards is that they can feel like a forwarded template, especially when they are just a simple static card.
An interactive eCard feels different. The recipient has to take part before the message is revealed. They might blow out the candles, cut the cake, or pop the balloons themselves. You can also add your own photo, voice message, and personal note to make the card feel truly yours.
Yes. A late card is still better than no card at all. Instead of trying to hide that you are late, make it part of the message: “I’m three days late, but you’re still my favourite person” feels more genuine than pretending you did not miss the date.
And because there is no postage delay, you can still send a card at 11 p.m. and have it arrive that same night.
Mention the age, then move on quickly. Milestone birthdays can make it tempting to joke about getting older, but those jokes do not always land the way you expect.
A warmer approach is to focus on what the number represents. Talk about what they have achieved, the person they have become, or the memories and experiences they have gained over the years. It feels more like a celebration than a reminder of getting older.
Match the reveal to the person. Blowing out the candles is the classic and suits anyone; cutting the cake fits a family or party card; popping balloons and inflating a balloon are more playful and go down well with children and anyone who enjoys a bit of chaos.
You can try every option on your real card in the builder before you decide, and switch as often as you like.
Yes. You can add one photo and an audio clip of up to a minute, and the audio plays as part of the reveal.
A recorded happy birthday in your own voice, or the sound of a room full of people singing it badly, is usually the part that gets replayed.
Yes. Sign it from all of you at the sign-off step ("From everyone in the studio") and share the single link wherever the group already talks.
Everybody opens the same card and performs the same reveal, so it stays one shared moment instead of fifteen separate messages.
Use a zodiac birthday card instead. Each of the twelve signs has its own card and its own reveal, so an Aries opens something quite different from a Pisces.
It is an easy way to make a card feel written for the person rather than for the date, particularly if they know their sign and know exactly which traits they will admit to.
